Chaz DePaolo has worn the many hats required of a lifetime musician and band leader, but primarily he is one hell of a blues guitar player. He is a storied musician who has lived the ups and downs of the music business, life, and all that lies between. He has opened for some of the greats and played for massive crowds all over the world. All these things culminated the foundation of his latest record Resolution Blues. The album is raw and as real as it gets, bringing a tangible sense of life experience, the subsequent suffering, and the remaining hope you get as you look up from rock bottom to the light of better days. You can feel the gravity of his lyrics as he sings, and then he drives them home with his masterful work on the acoustic….a one – two combo sure to knock you back on your ass. His only accompaniment on the record is the harmonica work of David Biondo, a fitting harmony to the masterful guitar work that fills in the sonic cracks like milk in the cereal bowl. That is right, this record is soul food through and through.
I was thrilled to be asked to shoot the cover artwork for the album. I knew whatever came of our session had to emulate all these heavy things and still show the light at the end of the journey, or in this case the rise from the bottom. The idea of showing him playing to an empty Red Rocks was a symbolic example of another promise never fulfilled, another cause to have the Resolution Blues…
